Paul Randal
Kimberly L. Tripp
SQL Server 2008 offers an impressive array of capabilities for professional developers that build upon key innovations introduced in SQL Server 2005. The use of many of these will have manageability and infrastructure implications for a database—and hence the DBA! There are also enhancements to existing high-availability technologies, plus a variety of significant new tools to aid in managing performance, scalability, administration, and troubleshooting. This workshop helps you understand how to exploit the new toolset and how to manage a database that makes use of the new features in SQL Server 2008. The multi-day format of this event allows us to explore each feature in more detail, with more in-depth demonstrations and labs.
Topics covered include:
• Availability Enhancements
— Database Mirroring
— Backup Compression
— Peer-to-Peer Replication
• Security Enhancements
— Transparent Data Encryption
— Extensible Key Management
— All Actions Audited
• Policy-Based Management and Multi-Server Administration
• Troubleshooting and Throttling
— Resource Governor
— Extended Events
• New Development Technologies

This workshop runs Oct 6 (9am - 4pm), Oct 7 (9am - 4pm), Oct 8 (9am - 12pm).

Real-World SharePoint Development Workshop [2 1/2-days] (9:00AM - 4:00PM)
Fee $1095
Todd Baginski
The Real-World SharePoint Development Workshop will discuss and demonstrate the most commonly used SharePoint development concepts/topics. During this workshop attendees will learn how to use Microsoft SharePoint as a platform on which to build line-of-business applications. This workshop will feature real-world business scenarios and examples to set the context for each concept/topic that is discussed. This approach provides attendees the understanding of not only how a given SharePoint development concept/topic works, but also when to use the concept/topic to solve a business need.
The Real-World SharePoint Development Workshop will discuss and demonstrate the following SharePoint development concepts/topics:
• Site Definitions
• SharePoint Object Model
• Features
• Feature Receivers
• Feature Stapling
• List Definitions
• List Item Event Receivers
• Web Parts
• Silverlight Web Parts
• WSS Web Services
• Packaging and Deploying Resources to a SharePoint Server Farm
• The Business Data Catalog (BDC)
• The MOSS Single Sign On (SSO) Service
• Excel Services
During the workshop Todd will provide a conceptual introduction for each development concept/topic before providing real-world examples which demonstrate how the concept/topic may be implemented. Todd will discuss the technical details related to each concept/topic as he demonstrates how to build real-world line of business applications in SharePoint. Finally, a question and answer session will be held before moving on to the next concept/topic.
In order to cover the maximum amount of material in the two and a half day workshop, hands on lab exercises will not take place. The full source code used during the workshop will be provided up front to attendees who are welcome to bring their own SharePoint development VPC and follow along with Todd’s demos. Bringing along a VPC is certainly not required. Some attendees may wish to follow along, while others may prefer watching the demos and taking notes. In the interest of time, the workshop will not be stopped to perform troubleshooting on an attendee’s VPC; however Todd is happy to help out during break time!
NOTE: An Internet connection is NOT required as part of the workshop, and one will NOT be provided as part of your workshop registration fee.
VPC requirements:
Attendees planning to bring a SharePoint development VPC should build the VPC according to the instructions found here: Attendees should ensure files may be copied from their laptop to the VPC before coming to the workshop.
Workshop takeaways:
Full source code used during the workshop
DETAILED Slide decks for all of the development concepts/topics
Target audience:
The Real-World SharePoint Development Workshop is directed primarily at developers although business analysts and IT professionals may also benefit from the conceptual introductions for each concept/topic as well as the real world examples and question and answer sessions.

Web Development for the New World: A 2 1/2-Day “Bring Your Own Laptop” Hands-On Workshop on ASP.NET AJAX and Silverlight (9:00AM - 4:00PM)
Fee $1095
Dan Wahlin
In this two and a half-day hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to take advantage of key Microsoft Web technologies including ASP.NET AJAX and Silverlight 2. Here’s a day by day breakdown of what technologies and topics are covered in the workshop:
Day 1: ASP.NET AJAX
Day 1 of the workshop explores how to use the ASP.NET AJAX Extensions framework to create Web sites that provide a richer user experience. You’ll learn how to build AJAX-enabled applications using Visual Studio 2008 that take advantage of the ASP.NET AJAX Extensions and the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit. This includes learning to use built-in ASP.NET AJAX controls such as the UpdatePanel control for partial-page postbacks as well as controls included in the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit. Create modal dialog boxes, draggable panels, auto-complete text boxes and other cool controls. You’ll also learn how to create client-centric AJAX applications that take advantage of client-side JavaScript and the browser Document Object Model (DOM) as well as light-weight AJAX applications that leverage client-side code to call Web services from the client using JavaScript Object Notation (JSON).
Day 2: Silverlight 2
In Day 2 of the workshop you’ll learn to build Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) using Microsoft’s Silverlight 2 technology to provide engaging user interfaces for displaying data and media. In this portion of the workshop you’ll learn the ins and outs of Silverlight 2 including, XML Application Markup Language (XAML) syntax, Silverlight controls, triggers and animations, control styles and templates, networking support, plus more. Key technologies available in Silverlight 2 will also be discussed including WCF and REST integration as well as LINQ and LINQ to XML features.
Day 3 (1/2 day): Putting It All Together
Day 3 of the workshop will walk through different applications to demonstrate how the concepts learned in Day 1 and 2 can be applied and put into practice to make applications that engage end users and provide rich and efficient user interfaces.

This workshop runs Oct 6 (9am - 4pm), Oct 7 (9am - 4pm), Oct 8 (9am - 12pm).
