Windows 7 Deployment Workshop:
Migrating from XP and Rolling Out New Machines with Windows 7
with Rhonda Layfield

Plus, Bonus Session: Windows 7 Annoyances
with Paul Thurrott
While Windows 7 is indeed a big improvement over previous versions of Windows, Microsoft has once again changed how many familiar features work. Paul Thurrott will explore the most frustrating changes Microsoft has made and provide ways to overcome them. He'll examine changes to the Windows 7 user interface, security, networking, digital media features, mobility, application compatibility, and more. If you're impressed by Windows 7 but underwhelmed by the need to constantly relearn old skills, this is the session for you.

Windows 7 is here. Your organization is poised to make the move. But do you have the tools and knowledge to successfully migrate your XP machines (maintaining user's settings and data) as well as deploy Windows 7 to bare metal (new) machines? Microsoft Desktop Deployment Product Specialist and Setup and Deployment MVP Rhonda Layfield will walk you through the process. She will show you how to leverage Microsoft's free deployment tools. You'll walk away from this 2 1/2 day workshop with the knowledge to be able to choose which deployment tools are right for you (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 or Windows Deployment Service or both) and the skills needed to plan and execute your deployment of the desktop OS.

Rhonda will show you how to determine whether your existing machines meet the minimum requirements for Windows 7 or your applications are ready for Windows 7 and, if not, what you can do about it. You'll learn to create images using three different tools (ImageX, MDT 2010, or WDS) and pick the one that's right for you. You will also learn what it takes to manage your images using the Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool (DISM) along with the Operating System CD Image Creator (oscdimg). The workshop culminates with a Windows 7 deployment to a new machine and XP migration to Windows 7. Don't miss this chance to learn which free Microsoft deployment tool is right for you.

Rhonda Layfield
For more than 25 years, Rhonda Layfield has helped people securely deploy, protect, and streamline their IT resources. She began her career in the US Navy where she spent seven years as communications specialist with a top secret clearance. Later as Sr. Security Analyst for an electrical utility company operating nuclear power plants she discovered serious security flaws in software about to be acquired. She also consults for large customers showing how to quickly and cheaply roll out 50,000 Vista desktops. She always gets the job done for her clients.

But there's one thing that she loves even more than solving IT problems: showing other people how to solve IT problems. Rhonda has a passion for learning products at the packet level and sharing that knowledge in her classes with clients large and small. She is currently an NT/2000/2003 MCSE, Deployment MVP and Desktop Deployment Product Specialist (DDPS). Along with teaching, she enjoys presenting at International conferences and contributing articles to Redmond and Windows IT Pro magazines. She has also co-authored two books, one on Windows Server 2003 and another on Windows Server 2008.

Paul Thurrott is a technology reporter, published author, podcaster, and the news editor for Windows IT Pro magazine. He regularly writes reviews for beta and completed Microsoft products, such as recent products like Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows Vista. He writes a weekly editorial for Windows IT Pro UPDATE (http://www.windowsitpro.com/email) and a daily Windows news and information newsletter called WinInfo Daily UPDATE (http://www.wininformant.com).

Mark Minasi is a senior contributing editor for Windows IT Pro, an MCSE, and a best-selling author, popular technology columnist, commentator, keynote speaker, and IT consultant. Mark has written more than a thousand computer columns, several dozen best-selling technical books, and has explained operating system and networking planning, installation, maintenance and repair to crowds from two to two thousand. An independent voice hailed as "Favorite Technical Author" by CertCities four times out of four, Mark has the unusual ability to take even the most technical topics, filter out the hype and explain them in plain English. Mark is probably best known for his Mastering Windows Server and Complete PC Upgrade and Maintenance Guide books, both of which have seen more than 12 editions and sold over a million copies. Mark's humorous, provocative and yet informative style makes him a favorite of audiences around the world.
